What is the International Year of Astronomy 2009?

A global celebration

The International Year of Astronomy is a global celebration of astronomy. Its participators aim to promote the subject to a wide audience and demonstrate its impact in society. With a number of Cornerstone projects they hope to increase awareness of the science and support science education. They hope to create an appreciation for our dark skies and protect them as a part of our cultural heritage. The projects also aim to provide access to astronomy to all, especially in developing countries.

Our involvement

HCO is using IYA as a launchpad to gain momentum and build recognition in the locality and the UK in general. As the international festivities culminate, our flagship Millennium telescope will be commissioned, paving the way for our main activities over the coming years. To commemorate the occasion, we are holding a special open weekend, Stars and September Woodlands, to allow visitors to view the new telescope and enjoy a woodland walk through autumn leaves.

Eyes open

Our Astronomy blog will also pick up speed and entertain you with articles and multimedia about a broad range of topics. The Project blog will be charting our progress as we come to the completion of the Millennium telescope. Keep an eye out for more events organised by HCO and its associates and keep coming back to this page for more information about how we are engaging in IYA and how you can too.
